CARBON CYCLE The carbon cycle is based on carbon dioxide which makes up only about 0.03% of the atmosphere.
INTRODUCTION • Plants use carbon dioxide gas to make food, but the amount of carbon dioxide in the air remains more or less constant. This is because Carbon dioxide is continuously recycled through the carbon cycle.
CARBON CYCLE The Carbon Cycle is based on Carbon dioxide which makes up only about .03% of the Atmosphere. The main source of Carbon in life is the Carbon dioxide in the Air.It allows the limited Carbon dioxide in the Air to be constantly re-used Green Plants taking Carbon dioxide and. combine it with water from the soil to make sugar & other more complex Carbon Compound. This Process is powered by the energy of Sun light & is called Photosynthesis. During the Night, they give out Carbon dioxide, they also give off Carbon dioxide when their remains decay after they die. Carbon dioxide is the waste product formed during these chemical reactions, it is returned to the Air as animal exhale like plants, animals also give off Carbon dioxide when they decay after death. The decayed remain of both Plants& Animals form fuse such as Coal,Oil,and natural gas.when these fuels are burnt Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere.
Oxides of Carbon Compounds of Carbon with oxygen are called oxides of Carbon. They are classified into:- Carbon dioxide Carbon monoxide COMPOND OF CARBON
CARBON DIOXIDE • Carbon dioxide was first prepared by Van Helmont (1630) by burning wood. Joseph Black(1776) obtained it from chalk.Properties of Carbon dioxide were studied in details by Lavoisier (1783).
CARBON MONOXIDE • Carbon monoxide was first prepared by Lassone in (1776) by heating Zinc oxide with Charcoal.
Physical properties of Carbon dioxide • It is a colorless and odorless gas • It is acidic in nature (its aqueous solutions turn blue litmus red). • It is heavier than air and can be poured from one jar into another. • When it is compressed to high pressure and subsequently cooled, condenses into liquid carbon dioxide(-78°C).On releasing the pressure, liquid carbon dioxide solidifies into Dry Ice.
Physical Properties of Carbon monoxide 1.It is insoluble in water.2.It is neutral toward litmus paper.3.It is an odorless & colorless gas.4.It is slightly lighter than Air
