Conventional Models of Parenting • Rules of Traffic Model: instructional approach to upbringing. Parents explain to their children how to behave, assuming that they taught the rules of behavior as they did the rules of traffic. • Problem: tried only to teach them the right thing to do; considered to be a single, narrow-minded method of parenting, without fulfilling the range of parental duties
Conventional Models of Parenting • Reward & Punishment Model: most popular model: give a reward/praise for a good action; give punishment/reprimand for a bad action. If it is done consistently it can be very effective. • Problem: gives children a false sense of the world as an adult- when we no longer receive “rewards” for a job well done.
Conventional Models of Parenting • Fine Gardening Model: parents believe that children have positive and negative qualities: therefore parents should “weed-out” the inappropriate behavior. • Problem: parents fight with the faults of the child rather than appreciate their current achievements or capabilities
Modern Models of Parenting • Modern Models of Parenting: non-physical approach to child discipline. Other civilized approaches to discipline such as behavioral control, structure, accountability, & parental supervision.
Modern Models of Parenting • Nurturant Parent Model: family model where children are expected to explore their surroundings with protection from their parents • Strict Father Model: places a strong value on discipline as a means of survival in a harsh world • Christian Parenting: some models are strict & authoritarian; others are “grace-based” and apply biblical principles to parenting
Modern Models of Parenting: • Attachment Parenting: seeks to create strong emotional bonds, avoiding physical punishment: accomplishing discipline through interaction recognizing a child’s emotional needs. • Taking Children Seriously: believes that praise & punishment are manipulative & harmful to a child and seeks other methods to reach an agreement with a child.
Modern Models of Parenting: • Parenting for Everyone: considers parenting from an ethical point of view. It analyzes parenting goals, conditions, & means of child rearing. It looks at a child’s internal world- emotions/intelligence/spirit. • Concept of Emotion: child’s sense of being loved and their ability to love others. • Concept of Intelligence: implies the child’s morals • Concept of Spirit: desire to do good actions and avoid bad behavior
Definitions: • Corporal Punishment: infliction of pain intended to punish a person or change his/her behavior • Behavior Modification: the use of behavior changing techniques to modify or improve behavior • Time-Out: an alternative to spanking and refers to giving the child time by his/herself to think about the inappropriate behavior
Definitions: • Parental Supervision: technique that involves looking after or monitoring a child’s activities • Physical Supervision: to keep a child from hurting themselves or others; keeping them away from dangerous objects and situations • Media Supervision: protecting them from violent or pornographic images • Positive Parenting: rather than punish a child for bad behavior, their good behavior is encouraged
