  1. Today’s Standard 1.2 Use common word origins to determine the historical influences on English words meanings. Vocabulary and Concept Development Latin and Greek Word Origins!

Word Origins Words are often made up of: Prefix + Root + Suffix trans (across) mitt (send) able (can be done) • Often the definitions or “sense” of words can be determined by combining your knowledge of the word’s Lain or Greek origin and reading the word in the context of its sentence and paragraph. Fabulous!

Examples of Common Latin and Greek Roots: aud, aus (hear) bibl (book) carn (meat) dict (speak) form (shape) lav (wash) man (hand) micro (small) mort (death) omni (all) ped (foot) anti (against) bene (good) hyper (over) intra (within) macro (large) mal (bad) mono (one) pre (before) post (after) tri (three) quad (four) Write five words down that contain some of these.

  4. Practice The root cred means “believe.” • Discredit probably means: • To go bankrupt • Is believable • To cast doubt on • To prove • Credence means: • Believability • Cannot be trusted • A clear water revival • Not very loyal • Credential probably means: • A small red bird • Supporting document or evidence • A bad attitude • To show disloyalty

  5. Use a dictionary to find at least four different words that contain the same root. Choose from the list below.
