Bell Vocabulary:Write the instructions below as your first bell work • Each day you will be greeted with three to four vocabulary words. In your notebook do the following for each… • Write the word and definition. • Write one antonym and one synonym without using a dictionary! • Write one sentence using the new word in a way that applies to your life experiences. (7-8 words long) Fridays will begin with a quick Vocabulary quiz!
Peer Editing • Read and analyze three of your peers papers • Staple a blank sheet of paper to the back of the essay • On that sheet thoughtfully respond to your peer’s work in a detailed paragraph. • Write your name at the end of the paragraph. • Look for errors in format (title? Spelling, grammar, sentence variation) • Is there a clarity of purpose? Does the essay make sense? • Does it clearly address the prompt? • What would strengthen the essay? (word choice, revise repeats etc.)

Chapter one- How to Read • 3 times is the charm • What is the reading about? Pre-reading? What are your pre-existing thoughts on the topic? • Analysis- Thesis, evidence, questions, clarity, vocabulary, opinions • Evaluation- strengths and weaknesses, style, flow, new perspectives, food for thought?
As you read consider…….. • Thesis? Give an example of strong and weak support provided. • Is the reading unified or “sloppy/choppy”? Are there clear grammatical flaws? • What stylistic devices are used? • How does it encourage further thought? Let’s practice…
Things to discuss • Who will be watching/monitoring all of these cameras? • How much will it cost? Does the cost matter? • Does the prevention of even one death from the use of surveillance cameras make the loss of our privacy worth it? • Are law enforcement cameras necessary in an era when most civilians record the things happening around them?

Chapter 2- Prewriting • Examine your interest • Understand the boundaries of the assignment • Determine your purpose and audience • Tone and point of view • Subject limitations – too broad? Too narrow? • Mapping, research available • Organization- outline
Interest • What if I hate the topic? • What if I don’t know anything? • Observations???? • Are you already an expert? • Are you biased?
Boundaries • Read the instructions! • Word count? Prompt? Summary? Opinion? • When in doubt ask for clarification. • DO NOT DEVIATE WITHOUT INSTRUCTOR CONSENT.
Purpose • Inform? Explain? Persuade? Entertain? • Combinations? • Audience- Race, class, gender, education level, religious views, interests and needs, bias. • Shared values creates credibility • Tone and word choice • Use of second person
Which is the best tool for you? • Create questions- Who, what, when, where, why? • Brainstorm – what do you know? • Expanded bubble maps • Free write… often becomes a draft Limiting your focus will create a more concise essay.

Ch 3 The Thesis! • Sets a tone • Demonstrates a plan • MAJOR THESIS MISTAKES • No opinions • No announcements of purpose • Don’t state a known fact • Be specific • Use of slang
Topic- School cleanliness and student responsibility • I think schools should hire people to clean, it is not the kid’s responsibility. • It’s not the job of students to clean the school. • Yeah, In my opinion, all students should help clean the school.
Much better • It would be a great benefit to American students if they spent fifteen minutes each day doing the basic cleaning of their schools.
Or… • Students primary function is to learn, not be forced into extra maintenance duties foisted upon them by administration.
