  2. Step 1 Scan in your sketch in RGB at 300 dpi(the standard for printing). Double-click the background layer to make it a new layer, so that you can make changes without affecting the original background layer.

  3. Step 2 Crop the image using the Crop Tool to get rid of the paper’s edges. Completely desaturate the image using the shortcut (Alt+Shift+Ctrl+B).

  4. Step 3 Go to Image > Adjustments > Levels, use the sliders to enhance the contrast between the white and black in the image.

  5. Step 4 Add a Layer Mask to the sketch. Click the layer mask rectangle which is next to your sketch's thumbnail. Use the brush tool to remove unwanted background details with a black brush. A white brush brings them back.

  6. Step 5 Add a new layer and set the Blending Mode to “Multiply”. Use the brush tool (set to black with <20% Opacity) and start painting the shadows over the sketch.

  7. Step 6 Add another new layer and set the Blending Mode to “Lighten”. Use the brush tool (set to white with <20% Opacity) and start painting the highlights over the sketch. Use the line tool to trace the outlines of the ship.

  8. Step 7 Invert the sea background: Use the Marquee tool to select a rectangular area of the sea. Right click and select “New Layer via Copy”. Go to Image > Adjustments > Invert.

  9. Step 8 Add the sky background: Import a photograph of the sky(use your own photograph or download a royalty-free image). Desaturate it and set the blending mode to “Overlay”. Erase the unwanted areas with a soft round brush.
