REGIONAL EDUCATIONAL LAB ~ APPALACHIA The Effects of Kentucky Virtual High School’s Hybrid Course in Algebra I on Teaching Practices, Classroom Quality, and Adolescent Learning Online Collaboration February 2010 KY’s Mathematics Standards As Connected to Hybrid Instruction
GOALS FOR ON-LINE COLLABORATION • On-line Collaboration using Horizon Wimba: • Share teaching strategies/resources, • Discuss planning instruction, • Analyze student work, • Share formative and summative assessment instruments/strategies that move learning forward, • Provide instructional structures where “feedback is focused on how students can improve related to learning goals,” • Others as defined by teachers and as needed to address issues in the field – including new learning that promotes student achievement.
AGENDA • Technology Issues • January Online Summary • School Visits • KDE – KY Mathematics Standards • Algebra I Hybrid Learning Connections • Instructional strategies for addressing the rigors of the KY Mathematics Standards
School Visits • Want to see how connections are made from face-to-face to online instruction while in the computer lab’, interacting with work done in the lab’, or anticipating to complete in the lab’ the next day • Send Lesson Plans • Indicate the Hybrid Algebra Research Standard for which you want feedback
Kentucky Mathematics Standards • SB 1 - New Assessment System: 2011 – 2012 • KY Core Academic Standards will be assessed in 2011 – 2012. • This year’s freshmen will be juniors in spring 2012. • End of course assessments could be included in the new assessment system.
Mathematical Practice Standard • Attend to precision. • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. • Look for and make use of structure. • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. • Model with mathematics. • Use appropriate tools strategically .
