Using TPO and DOE/EIA surveys to track wood biomass/ bioenergy – How can we improve methods? Biomass/ Bioenergy Workshop Houston, TX February 25, 2010 Ken Skog, Project Leader USDA Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory Madison, Wisconsin kskog@fs.fed.us
Background • Forest Service provides some wood energy source estimates • Fuelwood production • Primary mill residue use for fuel • DOE/EIA provides wood energy end use estimates • Electric power • Industrial, residential, commercial, transportation • A lot is missing • Intermediate wood fuels (pellets, liquid fuels potentially) • Sources of fuel used for DOE end use categories • Why don’t source estimates match end use estimates? • What steps could improve estimates?
What should we track? – traditional TPO & wood biomass for bioenergy • For the timber market – • Which wood sources are consumed – NG/NGS, HW/SW [same for wood for bioenegy?] • What is consumed by key industries • Industrial roundwood (several categories), • Fuelwood • Expand Fuelwood category? • Roundwood for residential fuelwood • Roundwood/ chips for pellets • Roundwood/ chips for other energy users • For primary product markets (sawmills, panels, pulp/paper) • What residues are produced/ who consumes • Expand residue fuel uses? • Pellets • Wood for bioenergy – electric power or combined heat / power • Wood for bioenergy - other
Wood energy sources, intermediate products, and end uses – 2006 • Roundwood for residential fuelwood • Roundwood/ chips for other energy users • Roundwood for pellets Possible revised TPO wood energy categories (forest wood sources)
Wood energy sources, intermediate products, and end uses – 2006 • Should we expand primary wood residue USES?Pellets • Wood for bioenergy – electric power or combined heat / power • Wood for bioenergy - other • Should we survey pellet mill wood SOURCES? • Should we survey secondary mill residue USES?
Wood energy sources, intermediate products, and end uses – 2006 Could a survey of pellet mills determine uses including exports?
Wood energy sources, intermediate products, and end uses – 2006 How will uses of short rotation woody crops be determined? Part of TPO studies?
Wood energy sources, intermediate products, and end uses – 2006 Should FS & DOE work to reconcile wood energy estimates? For 2006 DOE ~129 million dt USFS ~109 million dt
Wood energy sources, intermediate products, and end uses – 2006 DOE vs FS
Summary of suggestions to improve tracking of wood energy sources and uses • Expand Timber product output categories to include • Roundwood for residential fuelwood • Roundwood/ chips for other energy users • Roundwood for pellets • Expand primary wood residue USES • Pellets • Wood for bioenergy – electric power or combined heat / power • Wood for bioenergy – other • Survey pellet mill wood SOURCES & pellet USES/ exports • Survey secondary mill residue USES? • Are short rotation woody crops uses part of TPO studies? • Should FS or DOE attempt to reconcile differing estimates?
