Data Representation • Character • Letter or symbol • E.g. –letters of the alphabet, • String • An array of characters • E.g. a persons name • Numeric • Integers, Reals, etc. • Aural • Pertaining to hearing • e.g. Morse Code, Musical Notes • Visual • e.g. fingerprints • Musical Symbols and Notation • E.g. Clefts, etc.

Information Representation • Text • Any sensible arrangement of characters and strings • E.g. a letter • Graphics • Logos, paintings, etc. • Sound • Musical representation, structure give to musical notes • Video • Special Purpose Notations • Graphical Representations • NOTE: Many of these representation are intertwined and intermingled to give greater detail to what is being presented

  5. Information Sources • Types of information sources • Characteristics of information sources • Sources include: • Books • Journals • Catalogs • Magazines • Newspapers • Online Libraries • CD-ROMs • DVDs • Blu-Ray disc • Electronic Database • Websites • People • Blogs • Wikis

  6. Class Activity • Examine each source of information and identify the advantages, disadvantages and a scenario in which the use of the source is most appropriate in gathering information.
