In England, a religious sect, known as Saints, were devoted to abolish slavery • One Saint, Granville Sharp, helped rescue a slave (Jonathon Strong) from going back to his owner by defending him without a law degree. • Later, he won a case that helped make slavery illegal in England • The issue of poverty among the freed Blacks replaced the abolition movement.
Development of the Sierra Leone Company • In the 18th Century the British decided that freed slaves should have a homeland, which would be in Africa. Sierra Leone History • Rainstorms and lack of food made life difficult. • A nearby chief wanted rent from settlers and when he did not receive it, he ordered the town of Granville to be burned. • Sharp and others from the Company provided finances for building a new town and gave them weapons for protection • The company set up a plantation to grow cotton, sugar and rice by using native labour that was paid.
