Earth’s Moon Notes Chapter 1 Lesson 2 Pages 18-24 of your 8th Grade Textbook
Bell Ringer Predictions • 3 new facts you learned about the Moon.
The Moon’s Formation • The Earth started to form 4.6 billion years ago • The Giant Impact Hypothesis explains how the Moon used to be part of the Earth • An object in space the size of Mars collided with Earth and in this collision sent pieces of vaporized rock that blended together to become the Moon
The Moon’s Surface • No atmosphere or plate tectonics, the surface of the Moon has not changed much • Craters: represent the “dents” that were made when objects collided against the Moon as they zoom past it. • Maria pronounced “Mar-ee-uh” are the regions of the surface of the Moon that are dark due to the smooth surface left behind by the lava
The Moon’s Motion • A revolution and rotation for the Moon is the same amount of days so the same side of the Moon is always illuminated when looking at it from Earth • A lunar cycle is approximately 27 days • The illuminated part of the moon=near side • The not illuminated part of the moon=far side
Phases of the Moon • There are 2 types phases of the Moon: waxing and waning phases • Waxing phases are the times when the Moon “looks” gradually brighter everyday from Earth • Waning phases are the times when the Moon “looks” gradually darker everyday from Earth
The Lunar Cycle • Full Moon: when the Moon is the highest level of waxing because you see the most reflected sunlight from here on Earth • First Quarter Moon: is the second highest level of darkness with only a small piece shining • Second Quarter Moon: is the highest level of darkness with practically all of the moon not shining • Third Quarter: when the Moon is the second highest level of waxing because you see the second most reflected sunlight here on Earth
Home Learning • Return to the Moon article page 25 • Answers in a Paragraph • Going to count as a Quiz grade • Needs to be in your own words • Explain how from 1967 to 2013, our information about the Moon has become more accurate than before.
