  1. Balancing Equations/ Translating Equations Practice

  2. Objective: • Today I will be able to: • Apply the law of conservation of matter to balancing equations • Correctly translate equations from words to symbols • Evaluation/Assessment: • Informal assessment – listening to student responses during the snowman challenge and interactions as the complete the practice problems • Formal assessment – analyzing student responses to the translation practice problems and the exit ticket • Common Core Connection • Build Strong Content Knowledge • Make sense of problem and persevere in solving them •  Model with mathematics • Use appropriate tools strategically • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

  3. Lesson Sequence • Evaluate: Warm – Up • Evaluate: Review Homework • Engage and Elaborate: Snowman Challenge, Balancing Equations • Elaborate: Translating Equations • Evaluate: Exit Ticket

  4. Warm – Up – Periods 1,3 • Translate the following word equations: • (Remember to balance the equation at the end!) • Sodium chlorate  Sodium chloride + oxygen gas • Zinc + Copper (II) nitrate  Zinc (II) nitrate + copper

  5. Warm-Up Period 5 • Use the legos at your desk to balance the equation in the sheet protector. • Answer the questions on the half-sheet of paper • PS. The questions ARE NOT a quiz 

  6. Objective • Apply the law of conservation of matter to balancing equations • Correctly translate equations from words to symbols

  7. Homework • 9-2 Practice Problems • Lab Friday – Wear Closed toe Shoes

  8. Agenda • Warm – Up • Review Homework Problems • Snowman Challenge • (Period 5 Balancing Equations Practice) • Translating Equations Practice • Exit Ticket

  9. Review Homework Review Homework as a class.

  10. Period 5 Balancing Equations Practice

  11. Snowman ChallengePeriods 1,3

  12. Snowman Challenge Rules • Work in groups of 3 (at your row) to balance equations • When you finish balancing your equations, bring your paper to Ms. Ose to check your answers • The first team to have all the correct answers wins a prize • Do not begin until Ms. Ose says GO!

  13. Translating Chemical Equations PracticePeriods 1,3, 5 Complete the practice at your desk. It will be collected and graded for accuracy

  14. Exit Ticket • Translate and balance the following equation: • Zinc reacts with copper(II) nitrate to form zinc nitrate and copper.
