SunLase™ Laser Marking March 2011
SunLase™ - Introduction SunLase™ ink is used to print a white patch The graphics are created when a low powered CO2 laser changes the colour of the patch to black where marked
SunLase™ - Description Sun Chemical has developed the SunLase™ range of inks which are sensitive to specific low energy lasers, allowing the marking of high definition variable data on various substrates. • SunLase™ inks contain specific pigments, that change from white to black when hit by a low energy laser. There is no ablation. This technology, combining laser and colour change, opens up myriad of opportunities to add value to printer, converter and brand owner printing requirements • SunLase™ range offers packers and end-users the platform to introduce greater efficiencies and productivity as well as higher quality on their identification marking applications • It allows packaging printers and converters to sell “activated” packaging at premium margins • SunLase™ range covers most of printing and ink technologies: flexo, gravure, dry and wet offset, water and solvent based, oil based, UV • Patch is printed with a SunLase™ ink • When the ink is marked with a laser – a high definition black graphic appears
SunLase™ - Key benefits • High definition quality at high speeds • Packaging can be nominally patch printed providing unique identifiers and personalisation • Reduces SKU’s considerably because marked and coded on demand. Product variants can be marked at the final production step • Without resetting any consumables • Improved print reliability, important reduction of defaults • Cost saving and flexibility are achieved by removing the need for secondary applications • Possible combination with brand security and anti-counterfeiting systems • Improved traceability thanks to high quality individual coding (2D Data matrix codes…) • Helps improving safety in food pack applications thanks to huge reduction of particulates
SunLase™ - Target markets and applications (1) • Markets: all packaging printers/converters or packing companies: • Flexible packaging • Corrugated board • Folding carton • PE Films • Reverse-printed sleeves and plastic labels • Multiwall sack • Liquid carton packaging • Variable Data Applications: • Need of sequential numbers per pack / batch… • Unique identifiers per pack, batch, consumer… • Personalisation • Network based coding • Primary coding on flexible films • Date / Price / Batch codes • Language / Ingredients / GDA panels / Nutritional Information
SunLase™ - Target markets and applications (2) • End-uses: • High volume food producers with short shelf life products, for example: • milk: sleeves and labels • yogurts: PET/PP lids and labels • beverage: beer bottle labels • Medium to high volume premium ranges: lids and labels, soups, granulated products, • Personal care labels and sleeves • Toiletries, perfume bottle labels, shampoos, liquid soaps • Pharmaceutical labels, foils, blisters • Existing production of 5 million + outer cartons per year. • Current users of Hi-Resolution ink jet – Print and hand applied labels • Businesses looking seriously at packaging innovations and environmental issues • Businesses that suffer fines for poor barcode quality
