IntroductionRationale • Social networking sites accused of drops in grades • Most popular social networking website with over 500 million members. • Massive number of members has caught the attention of the academic sector and also us.
IntroductionResearch Objectives The aims of this project are: • To investigate whether the amount of time spent on Facebook affects the academic performance of Year 4 RI pupils. • To find out the pupils opinions on whether using Facebook affects their grades. • To find ways for students to manage their time better and reduce their time spent on Facebook.
IntroductionReview of Literature • Study by Ohio University • Facebook Users: GPA 3.0 - 3.5 • Non-Facebook Users: GPA 3.5 - 4.0 • Study by University of Hampshire • Heavy Users of Social MediaHigher grades 63%Lower grades 37% • Light Users of Social MediaHigher grades 65%Lower grades 35%
IntroductionJustification of Choice • Currently, many students have problems getting their homework done or studying for their exams due to computer addiction. • One of the many online networking sites that students spend a lot of time on is Facebook.
MethodologySurvey • Respondents: 20 Year 4 students selected at random • Reason for choice: • Longest and most experienced in school • Know how to manage time better • Question format: 9 MCQ and OEQ questions in total • Procedure:
MethodologyInterview • Interviewee (1): Mrs. Jacqueline Chua, head of Character Education • Reason for choice: • Interaction with students with problems • Know pupils’ behavior and thoughts well • Interviewee (2): Mr. Leo HeeKhian, school counselor • Reason for choice: • Counseled students with problems • Have advised and solve many students’ social problems
ResultsInterview • A small amount of leisure a week is acceptable • Prioritising, limiting amount of time on internet can prevent addiction • Find other ways to reduce stress instead of going on Facebook, e.g. reading.
DiscussionDiscussion of Results • Survey • Amount of time spent on Facebook does not affect the academic performance of Year 4 RI Students • Interview • Limited amount of time on Facebook may not affect academic performance • Excessive usage will affect academic performance • Time management, prioritising can prevent addiction
DiscussionLimitations • 24 out of 2 000 students of entire cohort • Only one social networking service (ie. Facebook) • Only students from Raffles Institution were surveyed • Only males were surveyed
DiscussionFurther Improvements • More survey respondents • Give survey to each class. • Give survey to Year 1 to 3 students. • Give survey to students in other schools
DiscussionImplications • Clear doubts whether Facebookis detrimental to students' academics. • Advise students’ on how to prioritise and manage their time wisely
