  1. Q: How online communities add value -the rise of the frequent flyer forums

  2. This is not a new idea • Travel boards have been around for a while, e.g. Rick Steves, Frommer’s, Fodor’s, backpacking boards, Lonely Planet • Airline forums – aviation news/airline leaks/geekery about schedules • Frequent traveler boards - established 1995, increased usage in the late 1990s. • Inside flyer magazine, launched webflyer.com and then flyertalk.com (domain purchased by a group of fans)

  3. Who are these nuts? Other than me. • Community is huge, first focus was on airline and hotel affinity program, now majority of traffic revolves around mistake fares and mileage accrual schemes • Brand boards –moderated by volunteers and many have corporate lurkers • Virtual relationships become real life encounters with Flyertalk Dos, some sponsored by brands, some ad hoc • Experience ranges from budget travelers, road warriors, to travel hackers • In all cases, the industry listens to what flyertalk have to say and change courses because of feedback
