IS 1301 Nanotechnology The Unit Cell
Solids • Crystalline • Particles are highly ordered in a regular 3-D arrangement, e.g. NaCl, Cu, C • Amorphous • No sufficient long range order to define a regular structure e.g. glass
Crystalline Solids A crystal has • A regular shape • An orderly structure • A regular, rigid 3-D arrangement of constituent particles – called apace lattice or crystal lattice A space lattice is defined as a regular 3-D pattern of points, the points representing the positions of the structural units (or constituent particles) which make up the crystal structure.
Unit Cell The unit cell is defined as the smallest portion of a space lattice, which, by moving a distance equal to its own dimensions along the 3 axes, can generate the complete space lattice
