  1. OBJECTIVE… To use group work, media clips and quotes from the Qur’an to understand Muslim attitudes to drugs and alcohol.

  2. Outcomes… Grade C All will be able to describe Muslim attitudes to drugs and alcohol . Grade B Most will be able to explain reasons for these attitudes. Grade A/A* Some will be able to evaluate these attitudes and compare them to your own opinion. Your GOALS for the end of this lesson are…

  3. Once a religious man met a woman who invited him to commit a sin. The man flatly refused. After her constant insisting, she still failed. She then gave him a choice of options: to commit adultery with her or to murder her newly born child or to consume some alcohol she possessed. If he was not willing to agree then she would scream and falsely tell people he had raped her. The man upon pondering decided to consume the alcohol, taking it to be least harmful of the three sins. Upon consumption of the alcohol, he became intoxicated, and then consequently, he killed the child and committed adultery with the woman. • What was the moral of this story for Muslims? • From this what conclusions can you make about Muslim attitudes to drugs and alcohol? Like in Christianity Muslims often use stories to explain their teachings. The following story can be found in the HADITH (Teachings of the Prophet)... Starter…

  4. Alcohol and illegal drugs are HARAM!

  5. HARAM= forbidden MAKRUH = disliked According to Islam, all drugs and alcohol are HARAM. Tobacco is known as MAKRUHas the Qur’an does not give any guidance on it, although a lot of Muslims want it to be seen as HARAM. Why is smoking MAKRUH but drinking HARAM? Why do you think some Muslims believe smoking should be HARAM?

  6. Muslim attitudes to drugs and alcohol… ALL Muslims see alcohol and illegal drugs as INTOXICANTS that should NOT be taken by Muslims. Work in groups to DESCRIBE Muslim attitudes to drugs and alcohol.

  9. Did you have… ALL Muslims believe their body was created by Allah so should not be abused with alcohol. And… ALL Muslims believe in bodily resurrection and the need for their bodies on Judgement day so they must not abuse them. And… The Qur’an says intoxicants are HARAM. And… Muhammad said intoxicants should not be taken and warned against them. And… The effects of drugs and alcohol mean you would be more likely to commit other sins. And… The effects of drugs and alcohol mean you would not be able to pray or fulfil religious duties properly. And… ALL Muslims obey the law of the land in which they live including those on illegal drugs. And… Under Shari’ah law alcohol is illegal and carries a severe punishment.

  15. In September 2007 it was reported that some branches of Sainsbury’s were excusing checkout staff from handling alcohol bought by customers. Why do you think they did this? In Islam the selling of Alcohol is also forbidden and is HARAM. Muslims should also not work in such HARAMenvironments. Why do you think this is? Do you think this should be applicable to Muslims in the UK? ``
