Renewal at a Glance! Beth Edwards, Renewed NBCT Region 1 RttT Professional Development Consultant Elizabeth.edwards@dpi.nc.gov
Becoming a renewal candidate is a testament to your continued dedication to the highest standards of the teaching profession. Is It Time to Renew?
Topics to be Discussed • Renewal Basics • Assessment Components • Scoring • Organizing • NBPTS Resources
Thinking about Renewal • NBCTs begin renewal in their 8th or 9th year of their original certificate cycle • NBCTs must renew BEFORE their original certificate expires • NBCTs must begin renewal prior to the expiration date
What’s Different? Profile of Professional Growth • The product is scored holistically. • Components are not scored separately. • Score reported as “Renewed” or “Not Renewed”. National Board Certification Portfolio • Separate entries that receive separate scores. • Opportunity to bank scores and retake entries to meet minimum score requirement for certification.
What is a PGE? Let’s see what you already know about PGEs Professional Growth Experiences
PGE must show indirect or direct impact on student learning.
A PGE demonstrates your on-going commitment or contribution to the profession.
You cannot write about a PGE if you are no longer in the classroom.
PGEs must demonstrate continued application of current National Board standards.

How to Begin Tips and Tools
Preparing for Renewal • Review and learn… • Five Core Propositions. • Standards for your certificate area. • Architecture of Accomplished Teaching • Requirements of each of the components • Tabbing each section helps to stay organized
Brainstorm Potential PGE’s • Technology • Sports Clinic • Literacy • Language Study • ESL Strategies • Interdisciplinary Teaming • New Curriculum • Inclusion training/teaming • Learning Styles
Post-it Note Pondering… • On separate post-its write titles of your memorable units, lessons or activities.
Choosing Products • Choose products to showcase what you did, not to document that you did it. • MAY include • certificates • student work • colleague work • your work • letters
Things to remember! • A PGE……. • is not a one-time workshop • can begin before NBPTS certification • can be outside your area of certification • must show indirect or direct student impact • should reflect current practices in your field or certificate area • should be varied and multi-faceted • should demonstrate your continued use of standards based instruction
