Thoughts from Brown & Lomolino’s Biogeography (1998) • Because of the explosion of data, many empirical patterns of distribution and diversity have been well documented for a variety of different kinds of organisms. What is still lacking is an equally clear understanding of the processes that have produced these patterns, interactions among these processes, and feedback effects between communities and environmental conditions. • One could make the case that progress in theoretical science has not kept pace with the explosion of empirical data. • There seems to be an increasing realization that many of the greatest challenges to modern science lie at the interfaces between the traditional disciplines. • Much of this (existing biogeography) theory was based on the reductionist idea that the natural world can be understood by taking complex systems apart, identifying their basic components,…, and then putting the components back together…to build up subsystems of incrementally increasing complexity. • …new theoretical advances…willbe increasingly holistic…. • We expect biogeography…to become increasingly synthetic.
