BeamDiagnostics - an appreciation and flavour of important issues: Review • WHAT DO DIAGNOSTICS SYSTEMS INVOLVE & HOW THEY FIT IN THE ENVIRONMENT ? • In our complex of Accelerators, since late 80’s , systems are NOMORE pieces of hardware only - software issues and integration to higher complex levels have become part & parcel of a given measurement system • The 1991 ‘model’ of Systems development and commissioning - System Specific software, Infrastructure/Architecture , Application Level • One must appreciate complexity of certain measurement systems as well as (a) general integration issues , (b) dependency on non-BD factors, (c) shutdowns, (d) history …. • Just two Examples • DSP Usage & development cycle: AAC, PS, PSB , AD…(LEIR?) • Wire Scanner etc.. People, Work, Priorities vs. Projects: { LEIR for CERN commitment to LHC, CTF3-Further Stages , etc } Review • Positive point is that for some systems we have new young people who lack experience but have the capacity to develop knowledge of OLD SYSTEM & build NEW systems BUT the INTEGRATION ASPECTS WOULD BE AN ISSUE OF IMPORTANCE • EXPERIENCED staff departures in recent years and next: DWilliams, MLeGras ,JOlsfors, CCarter, OMarqversen, GMartini, LMerard ,.. • Making the aspects of maintenance & /or system extension/improvements very difficult • HENCE,often for many systems one can only propose “extension” or ‘copies’ of existing similar systems & the associated methodology of access even though the physical sensors & devices may have substantially new hardware component in them. People, Work, Priorities vs. Projects: { LEIR for CERN commitment to LHC, CTF3-Further Stages , etc } Review PRIORITY SETTING becomes very Important : PRIORITY IN TERMS OF NEED & FINANCIAL PROVISION:new DEVICES - Example : PU’s ( AND CORRECTORS ? ) costs vs BENEFIT PRIORITY IN TERMS OF MANPOWER USAGE with clear understanding that importance of one would delay another Pivotal role V Chohan
Diagnostics Systems - a GLIMPSE on what next on important issues:{ opening a Pandora’s Box or A can of worms ? } Review • Controls + VME Hardware getting old/ Companies go bankrupt, disappear, meaning ----> • Do we have Spares ? BeamDiagnostics - Some Current Topics…per machine or facility • PSB: • Wire Scanners Details • Major Project ongoing for these 8 systems and at this stage , too early to say how far we will get this year. Complex micro-coded Motor Control, new ADC-VD72/INCAA-2MHz (not ICV122) , prototype electronics board, RT-task etc.. Delayed on the whole by 1 year. Manpower problem(Olsfors..) { history: 1 PS type device was installed for test purposes down to 50MeV with 2 regimes :extr. Photomultipliers for secondaries above 200 MeV & secondary emmission from wire for further down to 50 MeV } • One milestone is to check one system to work with beam before end of this year. If tests successful, the prototype extended for all 8 systems • Involves several persons in very significant manner with high priority • Image DGTZ for Inj & Ej screens Details:Feasible - • simplest, for tests : use OTR test method [ needs iris control as well ] • Definitive: needs, priorities & definitions with ‘NvideoOS’ or we can continue PCI systems a la carte ( CTF3-Streak C., TT2-OTR, ……………… PRIORITY ISSUE & ORGANIZATIONAL • [ remember : CCD cameras & RADIATION Hardness - OTR uses semi-rad hard vidicon? ] V Chohan
BeamDiagnostics - Some Current Topics…per machine or facility • PS: • Flying Wire in sections (H)54,64 (V)75,85: • M’ment with TREV or Internal timing both possible , one or other [ poor operational applic pgm ? ] • influence of beam loss: Can DISTINGUISH secondaries from photomultipliers separately from wire current [APPLICATION ISSUE ] • Discrepancy in identical m’ments on same device: ensure same ‘good’ beam, dp/p, intensity, flattop etc [check: KPriestnall + Uli Raich ….. • Sem-Fils TT2 ( 40 micron gold plated Tungsten wires) : ( TT2 SemGrids are 3 mm Tungsten strips) • Is IN/OUT really needed in PPM ? - one can do without because leaving it in even for high intensity may be OK without affecting beam blowup? • For Electron Cloud effect, improvements HAVE BEEN made, particularly with polarisation - but results not too positive ? BeamDiagnostics - Some Current Topics…per machine or facility • PS: • Q Measurement: • The present system was designed during 20 bunch era and is based on a half-a sine wave kick and so the phase of the kick was not too critical. Now, for LHC-era beams say with 4 bunches (which show much more unequal ampltd response) the kicker phase gets critical (even for Trev synch) & with fine phase adjustments and so the recommendation is to do measurements with sufficient intensity and at least 4 equidistant bunches till we get opportunity to replace/renew the system - rectangular pulse like PSB ?, BTF technique ? What DSP?..etc [ PRIORITY & ORGANIZATIONAL ] • WCM03 & WCM95 & TT2 WideBand PU’s 208, 228 • LIMITATIONS at High Intensity (nTOF & CNGS) - Attenuators /power stages get burnt/blown up. BETTER PROTECTION IMPLEMENTED • In TT2 difficult to understand ( Radiation? ) what happens because extreme tests (upto 80V) in lab showed no adverse effect .. BeamDiagnostics - Some Current Topics…per machine or facility • PS: • Mean Radial Position evaluation from CODD System: • NORMAL CODD m’ments are rejected when this option is chosen - it is one or the other - MRP m’ments done with interval of 5 ms • CODD - Several operational points • harmonic no sequencing: now done directly from Beam Control Timing [ Modifications in Software in CODS done recently ] • Vertical Scaling in Display [ Applic Program - ORGANISATIONAL ISSUE] • Gate, phase ,Base-line-Restitution Adjustments - procedure/ method : JBelleman on WEB OR, - EM (CODS) property /modification approach : feasible but needs S/W effort[PRIORITY vs NORMALISER Closed Orbit ] • Double-batch Injection Usage : Procedure Available but complex , ELSE MODIFY S/W: [ PRIORITY vs NORMALISER Closed Orbit ] • h=21 high energy measurements: • Measurements WORK - however at the limit because PLL VCO limits ; Originally was h=20 , now extended - { very large dynamic range h=1 to h=20 } V Chohan
