What Adds to Tone? • Word choice – Especially this!! • Level of formality • Writing style
How Do We Describe Tone? • Usually with adjectives (describing words) • Friendly • Pompous • Sarcastic • Cautious • If you are ONLY reading at the snorkeling (literal) level, you WILL miss the tone of the piece!
Purpose • WHY an author writes about a topic. • BOTH tone and purpose are adjusted based upon the audience the author is trying to reach. • REMEMBER: Levels of formality ?!?
