Major depressive disorder (MDD) • DSM-IVR AND ICD-10 AGREE MOSTLY ON DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA
FOR DIAGNOSIS • Symptoms should have been present for more than 2 weeks
5 • Five of the following symptoms • Within the same 2-week period Representing a change in mood or behaviour in the person

Symptoms of depression • Depressed mood most of the day • Diminished interest and pleasure • Loss of appetite • Eating excessively • Lack of concentration • Psychomotor agitation or retardation • Fatigue • Feelings of worthlessness • Lack of concentration – indecisiveness • Recurrent thoughts of death • Distress or impairment in social, occupational functioning
Can’t be accounted for by other physiological factors • No bereavement involved.
Dysthymic disorder • Fewer milder symptoms
