  2. Plot The sequence of events Percy, Annabethand Grover go into the underworld to get the lightning bolt back. Grover gets dragged by the sandals and almost goes into tartarus. They go to the castle of Hades and talk to him about him causing the war. They see his mom getting killed by a Minotaur but frozen in time, then they use the pearls and float into the ocean.

  3. Plot Continued • Percy and his friends arrive on Santa Monica Beach. • Ares shows up and has the helm of darkness and tries to kill Percy because he was supposed to be killed in the underworld. • Percy defeated Ares in a sword on sword battle. • The Furies take the helm of darkness to Hades after getting it from Ares.

  4. Conflicta struggle between opposing forces Internal- A conflict with a persons own emotions- Percy has to choose between his mother or one of his friends to leave in the underworld. External- a conflict between two or more characters or forces of nature- Ares is trying to kill Percy after their bet.

  5. Settingwhere and when the story takes place • Chapter 19- Hades palace, a giant building with stone figures in the front and skeleton guards, with a throne made of bones. • Chapter 20- Santa Monica Beach in the Middle of the day next to the pier, where he battles Ares.

  6. Characters The people in the story • Protagonist- characters who work for good in the story- Percy Jackson, Annabeth, Grover, Poseidon • Antagonist- characters who work against the protagonists- Hades, Furies, The undead guards, Ares.

  7. Mythological Allusionsa reference to mythology • The furies, three ladies with bat like wings who flew over Hades Kingdom, who made people angry, this is where we get the word FURIOUS.

  8. Mythological Allusions Continued • Ares is the god of war, who fought Percy after they made a bet for the helm of Darkness, when Percy defeated him. • Mars, the roman name of Ares, is the name of a popular candy bar.

  9. Mythological Allusions Continued • Sisyphus Rolls his boulder up the steep hill and has to let it fall on him after he makes it to the top, and after that he would have to roll it to the top again and again for eternity. • Percy sees Sisyphus when he goes to Tartarus.
