Plot THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS • They are going to LA to find the Underworld. • Percy meets Nereid who works for his father, Poseidon. • They go to Crusty’s waterbed shop and almost get stretched to death.
Plot Continued • They are going to the land of the dead to see Hades and see if he knows where the lightning bolt is. • Percy paid Charon to take them across the river Styx. • Charon didn’t think they would make it out alive.
ConflictA struggle between opposing forces Internal Conflict: A problem you are having inside of your body (feelings). • Percy isn’t sure if Hades stole the thunderbolt. • Annabeth and Percy are very nervous so Annabeth holds Percy’s hand. External Conflict: A problem you are having with somebody else. • Crusty try’s to kill the kids. • The kids think they are going to die, because Cerberus might eat them.
Setting When and where a story takes place • In chapter 17 the kids are in L.A. in Crusty’s waterbed store. In chapter 18 the kids are mostly traveling to the Underworld to find Hades.

Mythological Allusions ContinuedReferences to Greek Mythology • Procrustes- He is known as the stretcher because he stretches people to death. • Procrustes shortened his name to Crusty and disguised himself as a waterbed shop owner.
Mythological Allusions Continued • Nereid- She is the spirit of the sea and works for Poseidon. • Nereid helps Percy on his voyage to the Underworld.
Mythological Allusions Continued • Cerberus- Hades’ three-headed guard dog. • Cerberus tries to keep the kids out of the Underworld but Annabeth distracts him with a ball.
Mythological Allusions • Charon- The Greek boatman of Hades’ who takes dead souls across the river. • Charon takes the kids across the river Styx.
