  2. Railroads • The railroad was invented in England. • In 1825 John Stevens built a track and ran a locomotive around it in New jersey. • Railroads were the most important part of westward expansion. • The first railroad in the US was built in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1826.

  3. Railroads • The Baltimore and Ohio was the first passenger railroad incorporated in the United States in 1829. • In 1865 a man named George Pullman becomes well known for luxury sleeping cars. • The Interstate Commerce Commission wascreated to regulate railroads to ensure fair prices.

  4. Roads • The first official road in the United States was the Landcaster Turnpike it ran from Maryland to Illinois. • Some of the first main roads made in the United States were the Oregon Trail and the Sante Fe Trail. • The roads were used for many things. Mainly for migration west.

  5. Roads • These first roads were very dangerous and many people died along the journey. • The types of vehicles that were on these roads were stagecoaches and Conestoga's. • Many families would pack up everything they had on these stagecoaches and move west. • It would take months to move from the East coast to the West coast via stagecoaches.

  6. Canals • Canals- manmade channels of water • Two types- aqueducts and waterways • Aqueducts- used to transport water that’s fit for human consumption • Waterways- used to connect two bodies of water for transportation

  7. America’s Canals • Fastest mode of water transportation at time of establishment • In the beginning they were small and paid for by individuals. • Main canals in U.S.- connect the Great Lakes • Canals made it easier to transport goods down rivers and across the U.S.
