  1. American Cancer SocietyDetermiNation “A Little More Than Positive Thinking” Drew Brazier 7 October 2011 Itaintadiet.com

  2. Fighting Fatigue What is fatigue anyway? • Cardiovascular/Anaerobic/Catastrophe (CAC) Theory of Fatigue (Peripheral Fatigue) • - Insufficient oxygen delivered to muscles • - Blood acidity at muscle cells 2. Central Governor Model (CGM) - Brain subconsciously cuts off energy to muscles to protect your body from physiological problems and to preserve homeostasis. - If you brain thinks there are hard times ahead it will react. You can beat the subconscious influence with a conscious effort! GOOD NEWS

  3. Accept Pain What should you do when you feel some pain? Shut your mouth and keep running! No really, shut your mouth and keep running! You are waiting for me to say haha, just kidding, but I am not going to! The reality is you are running for multiple hours, you will feel pain. Just let it be, do not fight the pain. Check your stride and let your thoughts wander elsewhere! DO NOT: 1. FIGHT IT 2. LET IT CONTROL

  4. Dissociation • While it is important to recognize form and posture, it is not productive to focus on every 1/10 or 1/100 of mile remaining. • Distracting your thinking allows you to ‘get in the zone’ and let your thoughts flow. • surrounding environment • people around • motivation you have for running, think of the person you are running for • past memories… good memories • talk w/ another runner… good to ask them questions and make them talk! • thank all race volunteers • consider everyone cheering you on later • think about how cool it is you are not at work! • short-term goals

  5. Goals - when to walk • tryto catch someone • when to run again • run to a certain landmark and then decide what to do from there

  6. More Tips Make a race plan and stay close to it Night before go through all the ‘what if’ situations, make strategy to overcome. Develop mantras. ‘Cool an collected’ ‘Run light’ ‘Smile big’
