  1. Ch. 16 sec 3 The HolocaustI. The Holocaust BeginsA. “Night of Broken Glass” • The Germans claimed that the Germanic peoples, or Aryans, were a master race • Aryan was a misuse of the term because it meant Indo-Euro’s who migrated to the Indian sub-continent

  2. A. “Night of Broken Glass” 3. Nazis claimed all non-Aryans as inferior which would lead to the holocaust, a systematic mass slaughter of Jews and other inferior groups

  3. A. “Night of Broken Glass” 4. November 9, 1938 Nazi storm troopers attacked Jewish homes, businesses, synagogues and people in retaliation to Herschel Grynszpan killing of a German diplomat 5. Kristallnachtmeans “Night of the Broken Glass”

  4. B. A Flood of Refugees • German Jews realized life was going to get worse if they stayed so they began to emigrate to other countries • Hitler favored emigration but eventually countries began to close their doors to the refugees

  5. C. Isolating the Jews • Hitler isolated the Jews in segregated neighborhoods called ghettos which were then sealed off with barbed wire fences and stone walls • The Jewish people dealt with these atrocities by living as normal a life as possible

  6. II. The Final SolutionA. The Killings Begin • Hitler grew impatient for the Jews to die of starvation so he created a plan called the Final Solution • This was a program of genocide which is the systematic killing of an entire people

  7. A. The Killings Begin 3. Hitler felt that he needed to keep the Aryan race purified of all inferior or “subhumans” and to do that he had to eliminate all (gypsies, gays, Poles, Russians, insane, disabled and the incurably ill)

  8. A. The Killings Begin 4. Hitler’s elite security force called the SS swept across Eastern Euro. and the Soviet Union hunting down Jews

  9. A. The Killings Begin 5. They would round up men, women, children, and babies and take them to an isolated area and shoot them

  10. A. The Killings Begin 7. Jews not reached by the SS were rounded up and sent off to concentration camps where they were worked to death
