The US Department of Labor predicts a 49% job growth in health information and health informatics. The Importance of Security & Privacy in Health Information Systems To protect health information systems, it is very important for health informatics professionals to be well educated and trained in information assurance (IA). There is not enough emphasis on security and privacy issues in current Bachelor’s programs in health information systems. The Overall Project Goal Establish a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) concentration in Health Informatics Security and Privacy (HISP) at North Carolina A&T State University. This is the joint effort of the Departments of Computer Science, Mathematics and Management. New Courses COMP323 Introduction to Health Information Systems Introduces the broad aspects of health care information systems. Prepares students with the necessary knowledge to effectively manage health care information systems. MATH410 Mathematics for Health Informatics Examines the mathematics of health informatics. Covers the mathematical core competencies that are needed for advanced research in health informatics. MIS 640 MIS Special Topics Focuses on the business practices relating to health information technology. Includes department design and management, capital and operating budgets, the budget planning process, infrastructure design, and strategic planning. New Course Modules Course Module 1: Health Information Assurance and Security Introduces information assurance as it relates to legal responsibilities including HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley, HITECH. To be integrated into COMP320 Fundamentals of Information Assurance. Course Module 2: Access Control in Healthcare Information Systems Introduces various access control mechanisms used in the health care environment. To be integrated into COMP321 Computer Systems Security. Course Module 3: XML and Microsoft HealthVault Application Development Introduces XML and its use in Microsoft HealthVault, HealthVault application development To be integrated into COMP323 Introduction to Health Information Systems, COMP365 Programming Methodologies and Concepts • Department of Computer Science • Resides in the College of Engineering. • Offers Bachelors and Masters degrees in computer science. • Was designated as CAE/IAE in 2010 in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Management for its Center for Cyber Defense. • The BSCS Concentration in Health Informatics Security and Privacy • Required Courses • COMP320 Fundamentals of Information Assurance • COMP323 Introduction to Health Information • COMPXXX IA elective • MATH410 Mathematics for Health Informatics • MIS 640 MIS Special Topics
