Understanding the following information can make the difference between passing or failing.
Your writing samples are sent to Austin where two readers will score your essay.
Most of the readers are retired English teachers or people who have considerable knowledge of writing.
Each reader spends approximately three minutes on each essay. They grade between 150 and 200 essays in 8 hours.
Each reader can give a score of either • 1, 2, 3 or 4. 1 the lowest score and 4 the highest.
The two scores are then added. This means that you may score a total of . . 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
Failing . . . • 2, 3, 4
Passing . . . • 6, 7, 8.
If you score a 5, your multiple choice section is scored. • If you get 70% correct, you will pass; otherwise, you will fail.
? • With this information in mind, what conclusions can you make about taking the writing test?
Conclusions: • One: Must spend maximum time on essay. • Two: Since readers don’t spend much time reading essay, make your first paragraph a good one. Make a good impression immediately. • Three: After completing essay, do multiple choice; then go back and rewrite essay.
