  3. CONSTRUCTION Ferdinand Peck, Louis Sullivan and Dankmar Adler began plans for the Auditorium Building in 1886 and on October 5, 1887, the cornerstone was laid by President Grover Cleveland. The Auditorium Theatre opened in 1889 and was immediately acclaimed as one of the most beautiful and functional theatres in the world. Its architectural integrity and perfect acoustics were internationally recognized. In 1891 The Chicago Symphony Orchestra debuts on October 16 and makes its home in the Auditorium Theatre until moving to Orchestra Hall in 1904.

PRESIDENTAL CONVENTIONS The Republic National Convention was held at the Auditorium Theatre in 1888 (even though it wasn’t complete), and Benjamin Harrison received the party’s nomination. -later, in 1912, Theodore Roosevelt gives his famous "Bull Moose" speech at the Auditorium and is also nominated for President.

  5. 1941- AUDITORIUM BUILDING CLOSES • It was never financially successful. The Congress Hotel, built as an annex, was more successful. • The Auditorium Building closed during the Great Depression. • It was taken over by the city and used as a World War II Servicemen's Center, complete with a bowling alley on the stage.

  6. ROOSEVELT UNIVERSITY TAKES OVER 1946 Roosevelt University moves its operations into the Auditorium Building, but the Theatre is not restored. 1967 On October 31, the Auditorium Theatre reopens with the New York City Ballet's A Midsummer Night's Dream.
