AAFC 2014ITENERARY FOR FRIDAY 05 SEPTEMBER 2014 CAPE PENINSULA
08:30 Depart from Lord Charles Hotel for Cape Point. On our journey to Cape Point we will explore the 52km long Cape Peninsula, which is the south-western extremity of the African continent. We will pass the world-renowned Clifton and Camps Bay beaches, the Hout Bay fishing village, which is referred to as the “Heart of Cape Town”, drive up the very scenic 9km long Chapman’s Peak and continue to our destination through the Table Mountain National Park.
11:00 Arrival at Cape Point.‘The Point’ has been treated with respect by sailors since it was first sighted by Portuguese explorer, Bartolomeu Dias in 1488. By day, it was a landmark of great navigational value, but by night, and in fog, it was a menace. Ships had to approach closely to obtain bearings and thereby were exposed to the dangers of rocks. Therefore the first lighthouse was built in 1859 on Da Gama Peak, the summit of Cape Point, 249m above sea level. This historical building can be reached by taking a nice fresh 15 minute walk from where we park or an exhilarating 3 minute ride in the “Flying Dutchman” funicular. There will also be curio shops at the lower and upper stations for those of you who want to take some memorabilia home!
12:30 Depart for Simon’s TownSimon’s Town is situated in the “False Bay” side of the Cape Peninsula. In 1687 this bay was identified by Dutch governor, Simon van der Stel as a safe anchoring bay, because its unique location could shelter ships from the violent northwest gales. Since then Simon’s Town also played an important military role and the South African Naval Base Simon’s Town is still the largest active naval base in South Africa.
