Development of 2d- and 3d- coordinate single plane readout for GEM detectorsRichard Majka, Nikolai Smirnov, Yale University • In the framework of the PHENIX and STAR upgrade plans and the detector R&D program for an Electron Ion Collider (EIC) detector complex, there are various activities and proposals to use GEM detectors both for tracking and particle identification. • This effort points towards the need for: • a reliable GEM foil commercial manufacturer; • Gem foil test and selection facility; • different options for readout structure; • detector response simulation tools. BACKFRAME New approach for GEM readout: -- using the same Kapton foils as for GEM production low mass -- one side etching to prepare strip – pad(s) pattern -- using other side for pads via-connection “one side” technology, low cost Such a 2d- option was used for the FGT and GMT detectors in STAR; a 3d- option is in the R&D stage. Commercial manufacturer VHMPID Possible position in ALICE with modules of 1.4x1.0x1.10 m3 GEM foil test facility at Yale U. -- mount foil on frame -- additional cleaning step -- optical scan (if needed) -- HV test and gas amplification uniformity measurement GEM detector response simulation Triple-TGEM + CsI test beam and response simulation 1) 2) Strip (X) – Pad (Z) – Pad (U) 3-GEM response simulation Strip (X) – Pad (Z) 3-GEM response simulation This work has been supported in part by, DoE DE-FG02-94ER40865 050166 • V.
