Describe the work of the NAACP. The National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People [NAACP] was founded in 1909 by William du Bois. Membership was open to anyone regardless of racial background. It’s main aim to bring about equality for all. It was suggested that African Americans should go and live in Africa. Recruits were signed up to an army that was created with the aim of driving out the “white invader” from Africa. Steamships were also bought to take black Americans “back to Africa”. They also put pressure on the KKK. In 1920, they intentionally picked Atlanta for their conference; the city was known as an active KKK area and this was a sign that violence and general intimidation would have no impact on the organisation. The NAACP campaigned particularly against the Jim Crow Laws of the South. It fought its first legal case in 1910. Though they failed in this case, the organisation decided to use the law and the law courts to fight its campaign for civil rights. The NAACP carried out many campaigns. During the war, the NAACP successfully campaigned for African Americans to be commissioned as officers in the army. In 1918 they forced President Wilson to publically condemn lynching.
