What led to the formation of the NACW • Because of the vicious attacks to the character of African American women by a southern journalists • Disenfranchisement, lynching, and , segregation • Desire to uplift the race -national association of colored women
NACW founders • Founders was African American women educators, community leaders, and civil rights activists • founders included Harriet Tubman, Frances E.W. Harper, Josephine st. Pierre Ruffin, Margret Murray Washington, Ida B. Wells Barnett • Mary Church Terrell who became the first president of the NACW - National association of colored women’s club
NACW Mission • NACW organization mission was to help women and children suffering from poor health, lack of education , clothing , and housing • Raise funds for kindergartens, vocational school, summer camps , and homes for the elderly • Support the rights for lack men and women to vote and they promoted cultural events • Focused on job training and wage equity • Call public attention to issues such as peonage , lynching, segregated transportation, and prison conditions -national association of colored women
Three things I learned • The most interesting part of my research was finding out how it got started and the women who started the organization • This information enhances my understanding of the Jim Crow laws because it tells me more about what black people had to go through back then and their limitations and their mistreatment s and how it eventually led. To organizations like this and the civil rights movement • For this presentation I decided to include the main points about he NACW like what is it , how it was formed , the people behind the start of the organization, and what the organization does and their mission
