  2. Background • Initiated during the first NCSC in Lund/Copenhagen 2002 • Initially funded by Open Society Institute and co-funded by SPARC • Project started in January 2003 • Service launched in May 2003 with 300+ journals Sonja Brage, Lund University Libraries, Head Office

  3. Purpose of DOAJ making it easier for • aggregators & libraries to integrate OA-journals data in their services • OA-publishers to get their journals visible • readers to find OA-material • authors to find a journal to publish in OA Sonja Brage, Lund University Libraries, Head Office

Open Access – the definition: • Open access journals = journals that have a business model that does not charge readers or their institutions for access. • Extensive usage rights: From the BOAI definition of "open access" = the right of "users to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full text of these articles" Sonja Brage, Lund University Libraries, Head Office

Candidates for inclusion: • Suggestions from the community - +150 per month • Collecting information for evaluation against the criteria • Evaluating – decision – inclusion • Continiously monitoring for compliance – weeding uncompliant journals Sonja Brage, Lund University Libraries, Head Office

Benefits of being indexed in DOAJ • Global visibility • Increased usage, citation, impact • Integrated in OPAC’s in many, many libraries • Several service providers are linking to DOAJ • Feedback from publishers indicate that DOAJ is among the top 5 referral sites Sonja Brage, Lund University Libraries, Head Office

  10. Direct usage from the DOAJ-site: • Every month visits from 160+ countries • Redirected request constantly above 1 million • Visits from OAI-harvesters substantial However the indirect usage most important Sonja Brage, Lund University Libraries, Head Office

Developing countries in DOAJ • Journals from 50 % of the Asian countries are in DOAJ • There are about 30 Central and Latin American countries and 23 of them have journals in DOAJ • Out of 50 African countries,14 have got journals in DOAJ • 33 % of the eifl countries have journals in DOAJ Sonja Brage, Lund University Libraries, Head Office

Functionality: • For end-users: search by journal, articles, country, language, keywords • For the community: an available suggestion form for OA journals • For aggregators and libraries: they can harvest data to their services by using an OAI-PMH metadata format • For journal owners: DOAJ is powered by an administration tool allowing journal owners to add metadata on article level Sonja Brage, Lund University Libraries, Head Office
