Background • Jesus is tested by the Scribes and Pharisees in the Temple during the last week before going to the cross (Mt. 22:34-40; Mk. 12:28-34; Lk. 20:39-40) • He was surrounded by those who were dishonest (12:12,13) • He knew what was in man (Jn. 2:24-25)
A Searching Scribe • Who Was He? A religious man (v.28) A knowledgeable man (v.32-33) A discreet man (v. 34) • Lesson: A good man like this was still in error and in need of saving (Acts 2, 8, 9, 10, etc.)
A Searching Scribe • Where Was He? Not far from, but still outside, the kingdom (v.24) In a lost condition (Col. 1:13) In a place of decision (Mk. 10:17-22) • Lesson: A man like this was “almost” right, but all together wrong (Acts 26:28)
A Searching Scribe • Why Was He There? Was there no invitation (Mk. 1:14-15)? Was there no incentive (Mt. 13:44-45)? Was there no hindrance (Mt. 23:13)? • Lesson: Did he obey? We don’t know. Will you obey?
Not Far From the Kingdom • Many are brought near to the kingdom through… The godly example of others The reading of the scriptures The acceptance of some truth The character and teaching of Christ The practices of Christian worship The obedience to many Bible laws The plans to go further
Not Far From the Kingdom • Many get close to their destination, but never arrive! • How unwise it is to stay where you are! • Dear sinner, are you “not far” (Acts 26:28)? • Dear erring Christian, are you “not far” (Heb. 4:1; 12:15; 2 Pet. 1:10-11)?
