  1. Lesson 2:1.4 Categorical vs. Numerical Data What is data? Categorize survey topics as categorical or numerical.

  2. New Vocabulary • Data- Information. • Categorical Data- Information about categories. • Numerical Data- Information about numbers.

  3. 1.4 Categorical vs. Numerical Data • Categorical Data- Information about categories. Examples: What is your favorite kind of soda? What kind of pets do you have? What is your favorite basketball team?

  4. 1.4 Categorical vs. Numerical Data • Numerical Data- Information about numbers. Examples: How many people like 7-Up? How many pets do you have? How many hours of TV do you watch in a week?

  5. Homework Review • Choose your favorite survey question from last night’s homework. If you did not complete the homework, make up a survey question. • Based on the definitions and examples in class, decide if your survey question will collect categorical or numerical data.

  6. 1.4 Categorical vs. Numerical Data We will share our survey ideas. Write a N for “numerical” on your whiteboard if you think we are collecting numerical data. Write a C for “categorical” if you think we are collecting categorical data.

  7. Do Numerical and Categorical Graphs look different? • Lets make a line plot for two questions: 1- About how many hours of TV do you watch each day? 2- What is your favorite kind of TV program? (Cartoon, Drama, Comedy, Sports, or Other)
