SETURI – a Finnish Burden of Disease project on environmental stressors WHO EBD Kick off meeting Feb 13th, 2009 Olli Leino National Institute for Health and Welfare Olli.Leino@thl.fi
Background • In 2006, we carried out a study1 to analyze exposures to environmental stressors in Finland • The SETURI –project carries on assessing burden of disease for an extented list of environmental stressors in Finland 1 Suomalaisten altistuminen kemiallisille aineille ja säteilylle. Ympäristö ja terveys. 10/2006.
Partners • National Institute for Health and Wellfare • Finnish Institute of Occupational Health • Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority • Finnish Food Safety Authority
Objectives • To rank health risks due to environmental stressors in Finland using: • Mortality • DALYs • Selection criterias for environmental stressors • Public health • Public concern • High individual risk (occupational exposures) • Economical importance • Results comparable with other countries
Nature of data used • Epidemiological • Used when data is available • Toxicological • Used for exposures without sufficient epidemiologial data • Registery data • Used to include reference health issues such as accidents
Main outcomes • A national seminar (in Helsinki, Oct 13th 2009) • Several research articles in a national journal ’Environment & Health’ • Peer reviewed articles in scientific journals
