  1. UpperRespiratory System • Consists of the: • nose (snout, nostrils, etc.) • mouth • pharynx • epiglottis • larynx

  2. Upper Respiratory System Nasal cavity Pharynx Esophagus Larynx Mouth Epiglottis Tongue Trachea

  3. UpperRespiratory System • Mucous membranes • lining of respiratory tract that secrete mucus.

  4. UpperRespiratory System • Mucus • slimy secretion that helps to warm, moisten, and filter air.

  5. UpperRespiratory System • Cilia • tiny wave-like hairs that line the nostrils and help to filter air.

  6. UpperRespiratory System • Pharynx • passageway shared by the digestive and respiratory systems.

  7. Upper Respiratory System Pharynx

  8. UpperRespiratory System • Epiglottis • tiny flap that covers the larynx during swallowing.

  9. Upper Respiratory System Epiglottis

  10. UpperRespiratory System • Larynx • “voice box” • contains vocal cords that vibrate when air passes through.

  11. Upper Respiratory System Larynx

  12. Lower Respiratory System • Trachea • “windpipe” • has rings of cartilage that keep its shape.

  13. Trachea

  14. Lower Respiratory System • Bronchi • branches at the bottom of the trachea that are contained in the lungs. • Singular: bronchus

  15. Bronchi

  16. Lower Respiratory System • Bronchial tree • term describing how branches of the bronchi get continually smaller, like a tree branch.

  17. Lower Respiratory System • Bronchioles • smallest branches of the bronchial tree.

  18. Bronchioles

  19. Lower Respiratory System • Alveoli • grape-like clusters at ends of bronchioles where exchange of gases occurs.

  20. Alveoli

  21. Lower Respiratory System • Lungs • paired organs containing bronchi that are divided into clearly defined lobes.

  22. Lungs

  23. Lower Respiratory System • Diaphragm • a muscle located below the lungs that contracts causing the lungs to fill with air.

  24. Breathing Inhalation - drawing in of a breath

  25. Breathing Exhalation – release of a breath

  26. Breathing Apnea – not breathing

  27. Breathing Dyspnea – difficult breathing

  28. Breathing Bradypnea – abnormally slow breathing rate

  29. Breathing Tachypnea – abnormally fast breathing rate

  30. Breathing Respiration – exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide gases in the lungs
