#18 – Ulysses S. Grant • His real name was Hiram Ulysses Grant. He changed his name to Ulysses Simpson Grant when he entered West Point. • 1839-43: attended West Point. • Ranked 21st out of 39 in his class. • He was the best horseman in his class. • 1843-53: served in the US Army, rising to the rank of Captain.
#18 – Ulysses S. Grant • 1848: married Julia Dent • 1853-54: Stationed at Fort Humboldt in California. He was forced to resign because of drunken behavior. • After resigning from the military he failed at many occupations: • Farming, real estate, clerical work… failed at all of these jobs.

He became a clerk for his father and brother’s leather store. • 1861: appointed Colonel of the 21st Illinois volunteers. • 1861: appointed Brigadier General in charge of the Army of the Tennessee. His objective was to secure the Mississippi river for the Union.

Grant • 1862: Victorious at Fort Donnelson and Fort Henry. • 1862: victory at the Battle of Shiloh. • 1863: Siege of Vicksburg – Union Victory! • 1864: appointed General in Chief (3 star general) of all Union Armies. • April 9, 1865: Signs the official surrender papers with General Lee.

1870 – signs the 15th amendment – All males have the right to vote. • 1876: Indian Wars- Custer’s Last Stand. Also known as The Battle of the Little Bighorn.

He finishes his memoirs shortly before his death. The Memoirs become a best seller.
