  2. #18 – Ulysses S. Grant • Born: April 27, 1822 • Birthplace: Point Pleasant, Ohio • Political Party: republican • Term: 1869-1877 (2 terms) • Children: 4; 3 boys and 1 girl • Nickname: “Unconditional Surrender Grant” • Died: July 23, 1885

  3. #18 – Ulysses S. Grant • His real name was Hiram Ulysses Grant. He changed his name to Ulysses Simpson Grant when he entered West Point. • 1839-43: attended West Point. • Ranked 21st out of 39 in his class. • He was the best horseman in his class. • 1843-53: served in the US Army, rising to the rank of Captain.

  4. #18 – Ulysses S. Grant • 1848: married Julia Dent • 1853-54: Stationed at Fort Humboldt in California. He was forced to resign because of drunken behavior. • After resigning from the military he failed at many occupations: • Farming, real estate, clerical work… failed at all of these jobs.

  5. #18 – Ulysses S. Grant • 1860: Moved to Galena, Illinois. He became a clerk for his father and brother’s leather store. • 1861: appointed Colonel of the 21st Illinois volunteers. • 1861: appointed Brigadier General in charge of the Army of the Tennessee. His objective was to secure the Mississippi river for the Union.

Grant • 1862: Victorious at Fort Donnelson and Fort Henry. • 1862: victory at the Battle of Shiloh. • 1863: Siege of Vicksburg – Union Victory! • 1864: appointed General in Chief (3 star general) of all Union Armies. • April 9, 1865: Signs the official surrender papers with General Lee.

  7. #18 – Ulysses S. Grant • 1867-68: served as interim Secretary of War under Pres. Johnson. • 1869-1877: elected the 18th President of the US – elected as a “war hero”

  8. 1870 – signs the 15th amendment – All males have the right to vote. • 1876: Indian Wars- Custer’s Last Stand. Also known as The Battle of the Little Bighorn.

Everyone wants to see the “War Hero” • 1884: lost all his money in bad investments. • 1884: Began writing his “Personal Memoirs” • 1884: gets cancer of the throat. • July 23, 1885: died of cancer. He finishes his memoirs shortly before his death. The Memoirs become a best seller.

Interesting Facts: • 1869: transcontinental railroad completed. • 1869: Wyoming becomes the first state to allow women the right to vote. • 1870: 15th amendment passed – all males have the right to vote. • 1871: Department of Justice created. • Oct. 8, 1871: The Great Chicago fire. • 1873: 5 year depression • 1876: “Custer’s Last Stand” the Battle of the Little Bighorn. • 1876: telephone is invented – Alexander Grahm Bell.
