Livestream Press Event Today at 12pm EST, Facebook issued a proprietary enhancement to their most well-known product – the News Feed. These design and formatting changes mean changes for our brands and our clients we manage. With change comes great opportunity to improve and take innovation in stride. Here you’ll find what these changes mean for you and our clients. The roll out is limited today but will expand more broadly to the masses in coming weeks.
3 Points of Difference After 7 Years WHAT? WHY? Content : Richer/More Engaging Control: Choice of Feeds User Experience: Mobile Consistency 50% of content = Photos 30% of content = Page Posts
Content: Richer/More Engaging Larger, more prominent visuals Photos Video Places Third party apps/sites Stories Friends remain integrated into stories created in the News Feed. If your friends like something and share it with others, you’ll see the content first and who shared it will be more secondary to the visual. Friends’ comments are discovered by rolling over their faces in the sidebar next to the content.
Control: Choice of Feeds The organization of different feeds depends on the user. Whichever feeds are most visited by the user determines how they are sorted within the feature. The left and right hand sidebars are drastically diminished. Facebook Chat and Third Party Apps connected to your Facebook now live in a thin left sidebar (Events, Spotify, Soundcloud, Hulu, etc.). All Friends – Chronological Order Music – friends listening to, albums released, concerts nearby, artists’ updates. Photos – Friends/Pages Following – Pages/Public Figures, in chronological order. Most Recent – Friends/Pages Close Friends Games Friends/Interest Lists
UI: Mobile Consistency All parts of the new News Feed have been influenced heavily by the design and user interface (UI) learnings from the tablet/mobile layout. Consistency across all platforms means a more intuitive access and engagement with content and the platform. Mobile Tablet Desktop } Seamless
Brand Relevance Content Focus – Laser beam concentration on rich, visual content. The way in which photos and videos are showcased may include the text of the update overlaid on the image. Engagement – As fans Like, Share, and create stories with your brand’s content, the News Feed will highlight the content more prominently. It will also better aggregate friends of fans comments about that content. Analytics – Closely monitoring the reach and engagement levels of all content. Organic reach could perform better with the changes to News Feed based on the larger visuals but could also suffer from lack of discovery based on the choice of feeds feature.
