FACEBOOK ENDS TEST ON EXPLORE FEED
WHEN FACEBOOK INFORMED THE PUBLIC THAT THEY WOULD FOCUS THEIR EFFORTS ON USERS BY SHOWING MORE FEEDS THAT WILL BRING PEOPLE CLOSER TO FRIENDS AND FAMILIES IN OCTOBER, THEY CAME UP WITH THE EXPLORE FEED. THE EXPLORE FEED CONTINUED TO SHOW BRANDED PAGE CONTENT THAT USERS ALREADY LIKED OR WITHIN THEIR INTEREST. THE IDEA WAS TO CREATE A SEPARATE NEWS FEED FOR POSTS FROM PAGES.
ON 1ST MARCH, FACEBOOK HEAD OF NEWS FEED, ADAM MOSSERI, ANNOUNCED THAT THEY ARE ENDING THE EXPLORE FEED GLOBALLY. EXPLORE FEED WAS JUST ONE OF THE INITIATIVES THAT FACEBOOK TRIED OUT - LIKE REACTIONS, LIVE VIDEO, AND GIFS- TO NAME A FEW WITH THE DESIRE TO BUILD A BETTER USER EXPERIENCE. THE SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM, HOWEVER, COMMITTED TO CONTINUING ITS EFFORTS TO FIND WAYS AND PRODUCTS THAT WILL ENHANCE THE WAY PEOPLE CAN CONNECT WITHIN THE CIRCLE OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS, AND WITH THE INFORMATION THAT IS VALUABLE TO THEM.
APPARENTLY, IT TURNED OUT THAT PEOPLE DIDN'T WANT TWO DIFFERENT NEWS FEEDS. THE SURVEY IN SIX COUNTRIES WHERE THE EXPLORE FEED WAS TESTED SHOWS: (1) PEOPLE WEREN'T SATISFIED WITH THE POSTS THEY WERE SEEING; AND (2) TWO DIFFERENT NEWS FEEDS DID NOT HELP THEM CONNECT BETTER TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS. FACEBOOK CONCLUDES THAT PEOPLE WANTED TO SEE LESS PUBLIC CONTENT SUCH AS BUSINESS, BRANDS AND MEDIA POSTS IN THEIR NEWS FEEDS. THEY ALSO GOT FEEDBACK THAT TWO DIFFERENT NEWS FEEDS MAKE IT HARDER FOR THEM TO FIND INFORMATION THAT IS RELEVANT AND IMPORTANT TO THEM. PEOPLE ALSO DEMANDED A BETTER WAY FACEBOOK WOULD COMMUNICATE SUCH TESTS. THE COMPANY IS ALREADY ACTING ON THIS FEEDBACK. IT PROMISED TO EVALUATE WHERE TO TEST NEW PRODUCTS AND HOW THEY WILL BE COMMUNICATING SUCH INITIATIVES.
EXPLORE FEED WAS ALSO MEANT FOR PEOPLE TO DISCOVER NEW PAGES AND PUBLIC FIGURES, BUT FACEBOOK THINKS IT DIDN'T TURN OUT TO BE AN EFFECTIVE CHANNEL FOR DISCOVERING NEW CONTENT.
