  3. Introduction The ocean is a beautiful, fascinating thing. It is a habitat to marine life, a lovely place to have a swim on a warm day and gives our planet it’s blue colour. I chose the ocean because although I learned about the ocean in grade 2, I didn’t learn as much as I would have liked.

  4. What We Know • 70% of the world’s surface is covered in ocean. • Amazingly 97% of life on this world is in the ocean and yet we have explored less than 5%. We have better maps of Mars than we do of the ocean floor. • It was only in 1973 that we finally sent divers down to explore the Mid-Oceanic Ridge. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin went to the moon four years before we even explored this amazing underwater mountain range.

  5. The Mid-Oceanic Ridge • The longest mountain range in the world is the Mid-Oceanic Ridge which is under water. • It runs from the Atlantic Ocean to the Indian and Pacific Oceans. • It has peaks higher than the Alps (a famous mountain range in Europe) and covers 23% of the world’s surface.

  6. Life In The Ocean • The bottlenose dolphin is a very small whale. • The killer whale is the biggest member of the dolphin family. • The ocean has many of it’s own animals. It has a nearly extinct dugong which is the sea version of a cow. • There are hundreds of thousands of fish breeds including clownfish, angelfish, snapper and many, many more.

  7. The Pacific Ocean • 30% of the ocean is the Pacific Ocean which got it’s name meaning the peaceful sea. • The Pacific Ocean is the biggest ocean in the world. The Atlantic Ocean comes second biggest at 21%. • The Pacific Ocean is surrounded with the Pacific Ring of Fire which is full of active volcanoes.

  8. Volcanic Activity • 90% of the world’s volcanic activity happens in the ocean but instead of lava the volcanoes erupt with mud and rock. • Most of the volcanoes are in the Pacific Ocean.

  9. Surfing • There are many sports on the ocean but the most recognised is surfing. • In surfing I think we should be aware that you are not alone and watch out for all living things, from humans to animals. • Many water activities like boating and skiing can be done in any water but surfing relies on tidal movements and ocean waves.

  10. Conclusion • Sorry, it’s nearly the endfolks. • I hope you’ll look after the ocean in the future. • The more you learn about the ocean the more amazing it seems. Don’t you just love the ocean!!!
