Update on RAL Masterclass • Reminder: RAL Masterclass based on particle identification in ATLAS • Each group of students has to classify 20 events in the categories We/ , Zee/, jet background events using Atlantis • One event contains a H22e event. There’s a prize for the group who finds it • RAL Masterclass now being renamed to Minerva • Masterclass INvolving Event Recognition Visualised with Atlantis • Roman name of Greek goddess Athena • We thought we need proper name as there is quite some interest in the exercise • Now it’s more of a joint venture with Birmingham (Mark Stockton, Pete Watkins) • They are taking care of the Atlantis part • Here’s our new website: • https://twiki.cern.ch/twiki/bin/view/Atlas/MinervaMasterclass • From here you can download the new version and find all the needed information and accompanying papers (all updated)
What’s new to the exercise • Overhaul of Masterclass based on the feedback we received so far • Main changes • New event selection done • Each group starts with one signal event • First events are more easy and then they become successively more complicated • More signal events per group, last year we used ~50% background events, now it’s reduced to ~65% • Events now put in individual zip files a 20 events plus partly reduced size by storing less information in atlantis xml files • ~110 MB for atlantis version containing 15 groups • ~150 MB for atlantis version containing 20 groups • ~180 MB for atlantis version containing 25 groups • To be compared to ~470 MB in previous version • All 3 version available from the web site
New features • Missing ET vector in x-y view now visualises the magnitude Large ETmiss Little ETmiss
New features • Muon tracks now visualised as combined tracks (easier to spot) Muon tracks For comparison, old version showed only muon segments

Outlook • If you run from server provide result sheet to be typed in on the computer and then display of correct results for comparison and automatic analysis of results from all groups • Some more work in progress to add more functionality e.g. for undergrads or if you have more time for masterclass • Use invariant mass from two tracks to confirm you found a Z
