Materials World Network: Study at the Nanoscale of Photovoltaic Materials Ana L. Moore, Arizona State University, DMR 0908656 Modification of metal oxide semiconductors with attached organic dyes is a well-known method to extend the semiconductor photoresponse to the visible region of the spectrum; such cells are known as dye sensitized solar cells (DSSC). In many cases the dyes are deposited on the semiconductor in an uncontrolled manner that leads to a number of non chemically bound and aggregated dyes having poor electronic coupling to the semiconductor resulting in poor performance of DSSC. To achieve better organization of dyes on the TiO2 nanoparticles (NP), we formed the NPs inside reverse micelles and attached the dyes to the NPs through dicarboxylate groups, using the micelle structure as an organizing principle. These constructs are good models for the study of dye-semiconductor photoinduced electron transfer (PET in DSSC. Steady state and transient absorption and emission spectroscopy clearly show that perylenes 1 and 2 efficiently attach to the TiO2 NPs inside the micelles and undergo ultra-fast PET. Perylene 3 does not participate in PET reactions, presumably because steric hindrance prevents it form penetrating the micelles and attaching to the TiO2 NPs.
