  3. Bridging Plan • First 5 semesters: Use Dong as LOI • Pre-school, Year 2: Introduce oral Chinese • Grade 1: Introduce written Chinese • Grade 1 -6: Use Chinese and Dong for teaching

  4. Children learn L1 literacy using a Two-track method that focuses on 1) reading and writing for meaning and 2) reading and writing correctly

  5. “Primer track”: Emphasis on reading and writing letters and words correctly

  6. “Story Track”: Emphasis on reading for meaning and on writing creatively

  7. Graded reading materials • Focus on Dong culture and on activities familiar to the children • Big Books (for shared reading) • Story books (160 stories for each of first 2 years of preschool, 60 additional stories for each of grades 1-6 • Songs • Games / activities

  9. “ Children in Miaolan primary school who first studied Dong and then studied Mandarin Chinese are superior in every respect to those who never studied Dong. This applies not only to reading and writing Chinese pinyin, to simple mathematics and to verbal expression, but also to music, physical education and art. In every respect, those children who have not studied Dong are not as good as those who have.
