  2. Symbol • Ni

  3. Atomic Number • The Atomic number for Nickel is 28

  4. Atomic Mass The Atomic number for Nickel is 58.7

  5. Group • The element Nickel is in the group of metals

  6. History • The metal Nickel was discovered by a man named Axel Fredrik Cronstedt in the mineral niccolite in 1751 • It is believed that nickel deposits are a result of an ancient meteor impact

  7. Origin of Name and Symbol • The word nickel is a shortened version of a German word – “Kupfernickel” – which means Devil’s copper or St. Nicholas’s copper. • Symbol: first two letters of element’s name

  8. Commonly found areas • Nickel is mostly found in minerals such as niccolite and pentlandite

  9. Common Uses • Nickel is used in most rechargeable battery systems, power tools, and many others

  10. Commonly Found? • Nickel is found in meteorites and is plentiful in areas of Russia and Canada • Natural or man-made? – it is a naturally occurring metal

  11. Some Physical Properties of Nickel • Melting point – 2651° F • Boiling point – 5275 ° F • Density – 8.908 g-cm3

  12. At room temperature, Nickel is… • Solid

  13. Chemical Properties of Nickel • Reactivity – relatively unreactive – it will not combine with oxygen or water at room temperature • However – it can react with oxygen at higher temperatures, becoming nickel oxide. It can also react with steam to become nickel oxide and hydrogen gas • Flammable? – No
