Prewriting • Read the article “The Future Is Now” and select one of the descriptions as a basis/foundation for your flash fiction. Your story does not have to be about the technology, but the technology must be involved. • Decide upon a focused conflict and a character. • Develop an outline/timeline for your story.
Drafting • Type a double-spaced rough draft of 500-1000 words. • Your story must fall within this range to receive a passing grade. • Create an interesting and catchy title. • COMPLETE AND INDICATE A WORD COUNT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE DRAFT.
Revising (First draft) • Revise using the following criteria: • The story’s conflict occurs within the first sentences. • The story’s resolution occurs within the final sentences. • Story contains evident and identifiable climax. • Story remains completely focused upon the conflict. • Write speech as dialogue – DO NOT NARRATE SPEECH. • Make the necessary corrections, COMPLETE AND INDICATE A WORD COUNT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE DRAFT, and reprint.
Revising (Second Draft) • Revise using the following criteria: • Under 500 words: note where descriptions could be elaborated or where descriptive language is absent. • Over 1000 words: determine details that can be omitted as they do not contribute to the story focus. • Clarity (anything confusing, missing, unclear, illogical…if you have to ask, it’s a problem). • Make the necessary corrections, COMPLETE AND INDICATE A WORD COUNTAT THE BOTTOM OF THE DRAFT, and reprint.
Editing (Third Draft) • Complete a final edit of the story by completing the following: • Ensure the word choice of the author is precise, vivid, and accurate. • Edit for spelling and mechanical errors (capitalization, punctuation, and sentence structure).
