  1. Literary Terms We will be using these terms throughout the school year in order to analyze text.

  2. short story a brief work of fiction that usually (but not always) includes only one basic conflict.

  3. Setting The time and place of the story. Includes all the details – year, weather, time of day, specific country, state, etc. Dialect, clothing, customs, and modes of transportation are often used to establish setting. It serves as a backdrop and helps create the mood.

  4. Character The person/animal in the story. He/she can be round or flat, static or dynamic. He/she can also be a protagonist (main character) or an antagonist (in conflict with the protagonist).

  5. Point of view The perspective, or vantage point, from which the story is told. It is the relationship of the narrator to the story. First-person is told by a character who uses “I” as a pronoun. There is also third-person, which can be limited or omniscient and uses pronouns such as “he” or “she”.

  6. Tone The reflection of a writer’s or speaker’s attitude toward a subject of the text. It may be communicated through words and details that express particular emotions and that evoke an emotional response from the reader. Word choice or phrasing can covey respect, anger, lightheartedness, or sarcasm. Tone is basically the ATTITUDE of the writer.

  7. Theme This is the central message, idea, concern or purpose. It can usually be expressed as a generalization, or general statement, about people or life. It can be stated directly or indirectly. It can be figured out by looking carefully at what the work reveals about the people or about life.

  8. Plot The sequence of events. In most novels, dramas, short stories, and narrative poems, the plot involves characters and a central conflict.

  10. There are more literary terms; however, these are the basic ones we will be using. We will continue to add terms throughout the school year.
