  1. Network Media • Guided Media ( transmit the data over a wire) • Twisted Pair Cable • Coaxial Cable • Fiber Optic • Unguided Media ( Transmits the data through air) • Satellite Transmission • Microwave Transmission

  2. Advantages & Disadvantage of twisted Pair Advantage: • It supports analog as well as digital transmission • Inexpensive transmission media Disadvantages: • Noise prone • Transmission limits

  3. Advantages & Disadvantage of Coaxial Cable Advantages: • High transmission rate • Higher noise immunity Disadvantages: - comparatively costly - security problem

  4. Fiber Optics • Advantages: - high transmission rate - better noise immunity - it can transmit the data at longer distance - more data security - high transmission quality

  5. Fiber optic (disadvantages) • Expensive • Difficult to configure • Expensive maintenance

  6. Advantages of Satellites • The advantages of satellite communication over terrestrial communication are: • The coverage area of a satellite greatly exceeds that of a terrestrial system. • Transmission cost of a satellite is independent of the distance from the center of the coverage area. • Satellite to Satellite communication is very precise. • Higher Bandwidths are available for use.

  7. Basics: Disadvantages of Satellites • The disadvantages of satellite communication: • Launching satellites into orbit is costly. • Satellite bandwidth is gradually becoming used up. • There is a larger propagation delay in satellite communication than in terrestrial communication.

  8. Advantages Fiber Optic • SPEED: Fiber optic networks operate at high speeds - up into the gigabits• BANDWIDTH: large carrying capacity• DISTANCE: Signals can be transmitted further without needing to be "refreshed" or strengthened.• RESISTANCE: Greater resistance to electromagnetic noise such as radios, motors or other nearby cables.• MAINTENANCE: Fiber optic cables costs much less to maintain.

  9. Microwave Transmission • Microwave signals are also used to transmit the data & voice over the long distances through air without wires. In microwave transmission directional parabolic antennas are used to transmit the signals. Repeater are installed for sending and receiving signals along a line of sight.

  10. Advantages & Disadvantages Advantages: • It involves less costly technology as compared to satellite • Its transmission rate is high than twisted pair, coaxial and fiber optic cables Disadvantages • Difficult to maintain repeaters • Signal noise
