Main directions of UNESCO Chair Activities • Implementation principles of healthy life in the society through organization of appropriate students training courses; • With a view to define a long-term program of action, development of appropriate scientific concept; • Popularization of the healthy life in various groups of society through elaboration of appropriate mass-media programs; • Networking and joint activities with relevant governmental and non-governmental structures, similar UNESCO Chairs.

Conferences/Seminars/Workshops • In March 21, 2000 Conference “Physicians for healthy Lifestyle in New Millennium” was held at Tbilisi State Medical University. The Conference was dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the University and was co-funded by UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund), Section of Health Promotion and No communicable Diseases Prevention of National Center of Disease Control, and Tbilisi State Medical University. • In April series of Seminars related to Tobacco smoking were conducted for 6th year students (30 students divided into 2 groups): • Smoking as a risk factor for diseases • Methods of smoking prevention and cessation • The role of general practitioner in anti-tobacco education • In May 2, 2000 Workshop “Tobacco or Health” have been organized. Total number of participants amounted 42 (medical students, representatives of National Anti-Tobacco Center, UNESCO Chair staff and University staff members). Detailed programme of Workshop and outline of presentations are presented in Annex 4.
Translation • Information concerning health issues (related to Chair program) was translated from English into Georgian language. These educational material will be distributed among students participated in Seminars and among medical personnel in target objects. • Information on smoking and methods of smoking cessation (for participants of Workshop, health care professionals and representatives of aforementioned target groups) was also translated in Georgian.
Information and Publishing Activities • In May 8, 2000 Georgian TV (Channel “Sakartvelos Khma” – in English “Voice of Georgia”) have broadcasted 5 min program “Tobacco or Health” concerning the 1st Workshop organized by UNESCO Chair on Healthy Life • Proceedings of Workshop “Tobacco or Health” (for participants of the Workshop), • Booklet “Smoking Cessation: A Guide for Primary Care Clinicians” (for general practitioners and medical students), • Booklet “How to quit smoking” (for target population), • Booklet “Why are you smoking” (for target population) • Booklet “Doctors and Tobacco” (for physicians and medical students) • Publications for “Medical Newspaper” and newspaper “Medicine” • UNESCO Chair became member of Web sites related to health issues and is receiving daily information via e-mail.

UNICEF • In December 11-12, 2000 Chair members participated in the Meeting organized by UNICEF aimed to elaborate National Program “Children Development” for 2001. Meeting was held at President Residence (Tbilisi, Krtsanisi). UNESCO Chair “Healthy Life” was elected as one of the principal organizations responsible for the implementation of the aforementioned Program; • In December 27, 2000 Chair members participated in the discussion of the project “Life skills and healthy life style education for children and adolescents in schools of Georgia” which was jointly prepared by UNICEF and UNESCO Chair “Healthy Life”.
UNESCO Chair “Life Sciences • Chair members participated in UNESCO Seminar “Cellular Mechanisms of beneficial and harmful effects of electromagnetic fields” which was held in Yerevan in September 24-October 3, 2000. Oral presentation “Radiation Situation in Georgia” was prepared for the Seminar • Chair holder Prof. G. Simonia was elected as a member of International editorial board of the newly established journal “International Journal of Biomedical Research” (JBMR) • UNESCO Chair “Healthy Life” at Tbilisi State Medical University was elected as Georgia representative office of UNESCO Chair in Life Sciences – Life Sciences International Educational Center
Global Partnership for Tobacco Control Chair participated in monthly reports sent to Ms. Anna White – Coordinator of Global Partnership for Tobacco Control Essential Action, completed necessary questionnaires, conducted surveys on situation of tobacco smoking in Georgia.
Participation in International Conferences • Chairholder G. Simonia was invited to the 5th International Conference on preventive Cardiology which will be held in May 27-31б 2001 in Osaka (Japan). Her abstract “Evaluation of Endothelial Function in Healthy Subjects with History of Parental Essential Hypertension: Perspectives of Primary Prevention” was accepted for oral presentation • Prof. G. Simonia Attended ESC Congresses which were held in Amsterdam (2000) and Stockholm. She took part in Symposiums on Preventive Cardiology. • Workshop - UNESCO-USA-CAUCASUS (Armenia, Georgia, Nagorni Karabagh) “The Regulation of Cell Hydration in Norm & Pathology” was organized by UNESCO Chair Life Science International Educational Center, in collaboration of California (USA) 14-19 October, 2002
Projects preparation and submission • “Life Skills and healthy life style education for children and adolescents in schools of Georgia” prepared jointly with UNICEF and submitted for financing to USAID • “Cellular membrane enzymes activity and NO secretion in response to the influence of low frequency electromagnetic fields” prepared jointly with UNESCO Chair in Life Sciences and submitted to ISTC (International Science and Technology Center) “Creation of Tobacco free zone at Tbilisi State Medical University” • “Creation of Disease Prevention Centre at UNESCO Chair “Healthy Life” (Phase I) submitted to UNESCO Almaty. • IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROJECT “TRAINING OF MEDICAL STUDENTS FOR HIV / AIDS PRIMARY PREVENTION”
IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROJECT “TRAINING OF MEDICAL STUDENTS FOR HIV/AIDS PRIMARY PREVENTION” The overall goal of the project is conducting training of medical students in the field of HIV/AIDS primary prevention for reducing the incidence of HIV/AIDS spread via risk-reduction education among vulnerable groups of population
Based on the aforementioned goal the following objectives have been identified: • Opening the project with Conference “Youth without AIDS” • Collection and translation of information concerning primary prevention of HIV/AIDS • Training of medical students on the issues of HIV/AIDS primary prevention (peer education) • Distribution of the relevant information materials • Provision of individual consultations on HIV/AIDS primary prevention among target groups (adolescents, college students. students of high school)
